First select your search engine. Alta Vista, Excite, and Infoseek are web crawlers. The computers at these firms are constantly examining and indexing the entire net. They collect a lot of information; most of which is garbage.

You need to narrow your search to use these engines,. Searches are narrowed using boolean operators. If you simply type keywords of interest in a row, the search engine assumes that you want any document that has any of the words listed.

There are more effective ways. Group words that should be together (like names) with quotes (""). A plus (+) before a word means that both words must be found in the document. A minus (-) before a word excludes documents that has the words(s).

You will further refine your search as you find more topics that are associated with your topic. Be sure to not the URLs of sites that have useful information. You will need to reference those sites and they often serve as pointers to other useful sites.

Yahoo is similar to the above search engines except that you must register addresses at Yahoo. Yahoo is very useful for finding sites that reference information of general interest. and companies Simply type a word or two that describes your topic in the space for Yahoo.
